Taking care of your horse’s teeth are one of the many things that needs regular maintenance. Horse teeth grow throughout their lives so regular maintenance can help your horse have a healthy mouth. Having a professional such as a veterinarian or an equine dentist is required. If you have a young horse it is highly recommended to get their teeth checked every 6 months because they will be losing their baby teeth. Cleaning horse teeth is something that can be done, but is not necessary.
1)Have a professional such as a veterinarian or equine dentist come check the horse’s teeth. They can float, or rasp, teeth that are too long and sharp. This is routine maintenance for horses so they won’t feel any discomfort with their daily lives.
2)
Check the animal's teeth between annual dental visits. Teeth that are too sharp can lead to problems grinding food and then the horse will not be receiving all of its necessary nutrients from its food. This can lead to colic or even choking. Some horses can also get cavities, so keep a look out for those as well.
3)
Look for any unusual behavior problems such as a horse that gets aggravated with a bit or is having trouble eating, if so, see a professional. Bad breath in a horse is a sign of needing dental care, also one that has reddened gums and undigested food in their manure.
4)
If you would like to brush your horse’s teeth try using a toothbrush and water, toothpaste is not necessary. Keep in mind clean water and grass are great ways to keep your horse’s teeth clean.
